What happened next was as troubling as you would expect. It was one of the hardest events in my life. The surprise, though not really a surprise, is that the children turned to Bailey for their comfort. Yes, they knew Miss Clara, but she represented their mother in times of crisis. I was the least known to them. Bailey had been their constant, while Abby had worked in the background to get answers to secure their future.

Miss Clara was warmed to see the girls go immediately to Bailey, each child commandeering a side of her, but we were all moved when the older, wiser, and tougher Lucas also went and sat next to Bailey. She enveloped all three of them in her love, compassion, and care like only an experienced mom of three could do. I felt a pang of jealousy and hated myself for it. I so desperately wanted to feel little arms wrapped around my neck. I wanted to be some little person’s security and comfort. Bailey was the one who had been there for these children since the day their mother disappeared while I was out chasing clues, trying to find out what happened to her. Bailey was what they needed now. Later, they would want answers. Right now, I told myself, they needed to feel loved and safe.

“This is why you were asking about Mom-Mom and Pop-Pop, isn’t it?” Lucas asked. He was strong and composed despite the tears that ran like a gentle summer stream down his suntanned cheeks.

“Yes,” Bailey answered.

“Did you find them? Do they know? Why didn’t they come for us?” he asked. Each question was laced with more emotion than the previous one.

Miss Clara came to the rescue, “Honey, you’re old enough to know that your mom went through many things in her life. And not all of them were good. Right now, we’re still a little foggy about who in your mom’s life caused her harm, and until we solve that, we aren’t willing to let any of those people be around you and your sisters. Your grandparents have been told about your mom, but they don’t know where you are because we have to make sure, above all else, that you three are safe.”

“Mom-Mom and Pop-Pop never hurt Mom,” Lucas said. “They should be here with us.”

“I know, honey,” Miss Clara said. “We just have to be sure. There are rules and procedures we have to follow. We know someone hurt your mother deeply when she was young. And we know people continued to hurt her throughout her life. We just don’t want to take a chance on any of those people hurting you. We are proceeding with caution to make sure that you are all safe. I’m not saying it was your Mom-Mom or Pop-Pop, but maybe it was someone close to them, and they didn’t know.”

“Why didn’t you just ask me? I can tell you who hurt her,” Lucas said. He sounded angry, and I couldn’t blame him.
